A fruitful collaboration with the California Academy of Sciences The California Academy of Sciences is among the largest Natural History museums in the world and is committed to leading-edge research. It is also highly focused on educational outreach. We started working with the California Academy of Sciences in 2011 and brought CellScope to various science fairs at the museum. (Here is a video featuring the CellScope education team during one of these visits) Since 2011 we have learned a lot about how people engage with CellScope through the exposure we received at the Academy. In May 2013 we completed our first big milestone by deploying a set of 15 iPad Scopes to the Academy's after school program. The Rock Program seeks to ensure that every 4th and 5th grade student in San Francisco as well as the teachers and families who support them, have access to quality science and sustainable education opportunities. We worked with Lindzy Bivings, Manager of Enhanced Museum Visits for Students, and her team to re-design CellScope to fit their classroom needs. We adjusted the design of CellScope to fit iPads instead of iPhones and reworked the stage, focus mechanism, and light source to make it even more 'child-proof'. Lindzy and her team developed curriculum (which will be available here soon), and the scopes are already in full action in the classrooms at the Academy. We are happy that through this collaboration approximately 2,000 students per year will get to explore the microscopic world by tapping, swiping, pinching and panning on an iPad touch screen! We also collaborate with museums such as the San Francisco Exploratorium or the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany in order to develop a CellScope based, hands-on exhibition piece to reach a broader audience with an interest in microscopy and alternative uses of mobile devices like cellphones.
