Oceans

Survey ocean microorganisms right on the boat.

Kahi Kai and Hōkūle`a
The project leaders of Kahi Kai, Aldine Amiel, Eric Roettinger and Anuschka Faucci believe that teaching Hawai’i’s youth is the first step in developing a shared awareness and sense of responsibility for the marine environment. In several workshops they introduce students to the concept of “ocean health” by taking them in the field to collect data from various water quality indicators, including plankton samples which the students image on site with CellScope. This  approach combines hands-on experience in the field coupled with appealing images that illustrate the unseen oceanic world with the use of modern touch-screen technology. Through Kahi Kai one of our CellScopes embarked on a worldwide voyage on a polynesian voyaging canoe (Hokulea) in collaboration with the Polynesian Voyaging Society.  The voyage is themed “Malama honua” - "Taking care of island Earth”. and the CellScope is used to image plankton along the way and for outreach events at different stops around the world, centered on the importance of plankton and conservation of the ocean. Please follow Kahi Kai on Facebook for current updates on their many outreach projects with CellScope!
